Hashtagging is the most important part of the Twitter and your personal twitter experience. A simple thing like adding a # before a word or a group of words links you to people that use the same # saying. This lets twitter group you with people that have similar interests. So on twitter you can be searched by your name as well as the topics that you like that you talk about. Twitter is also used by organizations, they can hashtag things to raise awareness of their product as well as inform people about promotions. This is a very cost efficiant way to spread the word and it has become very popular.
I think that this was a very smart invention for Twitter because this can generate tons of people coming to the site to follow a specific product, person, industry, etc. Also this is something that many companies can profit off of because of having a precise way for companies to get people to their product can draw in business.
